Calvin Haynes and Taft Keeps Its Distance By Sean Ceglinsky, Staff Writer
For those West Valley League boys' basketball programs under the impression they could catch Taft of Woodland Hills on an off night and perhaps upset the Daily News' second-ranked team, it's time to think again. The Toreadors left little doubt as to who the top team is Wednesday, defeating rival Cleveland of Reseda 77-51 to remain undefeated in league play, in which they're beating opponents by an average of 30.4 points per game. "We were hungry tonight. We wanted to win big," Taft coach Derrick Taylor said. "It's always a big deal when we play Cleveland . We have history. You have to throw records out the window when we play. We want to win the two games we play against Cleveland every year. "This one was extra special because we're trying to put some degree of separation between us and the rest of the pack." This time, it wasn't Taft's three standouts - Oscar Bellfield, Larry Drew and Calvin Haynes - who did the major damage. It was role players like Eugene Phelps and Justin Hawkins. Phelps, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, had six of Taft's first seven points, 10 at intermission and 18 by game's end. Hawkins, a 6-2 freshman, provided a spark off the bench, scoring nine points during a stretch covering the first and second quarters, and finished with 13. "We came out inspired," Phelps said. Taft (14-4, 5-0) opened up a 16-point halftime lead, extended the advantage to as many as 23 in the third quarter and never gave the Cavaliers (5-11, 2-3), ranked No. 16, an inkling they could get back into the game. Drew scored eight points and had eight assists, six in the fourth quarter, and three steals. Calvin Haynes finished with 19 points and teammate Anthony Edwards added 10. "There was never any doubt about this game," Drew said. "When we play team basketball, we're unstoppable." DeAndre Myles led Cleveland with 15 points, including four 3-pointers, and Corey Duncan finished with 10.
