Toreadors' Calvin Haynes Scores 29 Points In Victory
Sylmar is no match for Taft.

The Taft High of Woodland Hills boys' basketball team moved up to the top spot in the Daily News' rankings this week and looked every bit the part Saturday night.

The visiting Toreadors dismantled No. 12 Sylmar 98-72 in a nonleague victory that figures to strengthen their claim as the best program in the area.

"We're playing some pretty good basketball right now. Nothing scares us," Taft coach Derrick Taylor said. "We're peaking at the right time."

Taft (18-5) opened up a 23-13 lead in the first quarter and extended the advantage to 23 points at the half. Sylmar (13-9) played with a sense of urgency after intermission and cut the deficit to 14 points midway through the third quarter.

But the Toreadors increased the lead back to 23 points to begin the fourth quarter.

"Taft is on another level," Sylmar assistant coach Charles White said. "To be the best, you have to play and compete with the best. They're tough."

Calvin Haynes scored a game-high 29 points for Taft. Teammate Larry Drew scored 13 points and had 11 assists. Mat Hankins led the Spartans with 18 points.
