It's Not a Good Ending for Calvin Haynes and Taft HS
Erik Boal | DailyNews.com Their athleticism and big-play ability kept them in the game into the fourth quarter. Their youth and inexperience took them out of it down the stretch. For the members of the Taft High of Woodland Hills boys' basketball team, Tuesday night's game against host Clovis West High of Fresno was another example that they are capable of competing with the top teams in the state. For Toreadors coach Derrick Taylor, it was another reminder that Taft might still be a year away from joining their elite company. Clovis West's maturity and poise were the difference in the final five minutes, leading the second-seeded Golden Eagles to a 77-67 victory in the opening round of the Southern California Regionals in the Div. I state tournament. "We don't quite know how to win yet," said Taft coach Derrick Taylor, whose team trailed 64-59 with 2:40 remaining, then watched as Tim Shelton and De'Jon Jackson combined to score 11 of the final 13 points for Clovis West (28-2). "All seven of our losses are against the top teams in the state. We can handle the middle-of-the-road teams, no problem. But we don't know how to beat the elite teams yet. We'll just use this as another learning experience." A painful one at that, especially for Oregon State-bound senior Calvin Haynes, who scored 19 points in his final game for the Toreadors. "It's very frustrating," said Calvin Haynes, who kept the Toreadors (24-7) within striking distance in the first half, scoring 12 of his team's 35 points. "It was just a lack of maturity. For a lot of our guys, this was their first big test and we didn't pass it. There was too much one on one and we didn't execute (in the fourth quarter). It stings pretty hard." Calvin Haynes' 3-pointer to open the third quarter tied the score at 38-38, then Larry Drew, Jr. scored two of his team-high 22 points to give Taft - ranked 18th in the state by Cal-Hi Sports - its only lead.
